About Dr. Michael Forbes
Dr. Michael Forbes was born in Kingston, Jamaica and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. As a young boy, he was fascinated with the thought of being a doctor and helping people, which led to his journey from poverty in Brooklyn to medical school at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Forbes worked at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for 25 years, nine of which were spent at Allegheny Hospital serving adults and children. The balance of his time was spent at the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital, performing research in the ICU. In 2005, Dr. Forbes was recruited to Akron Children’s Hospital. Dr. Forbes attributes Akron Children’s Hospital's success to incorporating its culture into its programs and by hiring people who reflect that culture. He feels that the hospital has done a good job of expanding its geographic footprint and must continue to focus on human connections to develop a culture of trust and love, which encourages open, honest communication between doctor and patient.
Dr. Forbes has a unique view of the pediatric intensive care unit's ability to focus on critical care needs of the patient, as well as prevention. He will also address how advances in medical technology will impact the future of health care.
Dr. Forbes and his wife Dr. Yolanda Moore-Forbes met while undergraduates and have been married for 32 years.
