Come join us for breakfast the second Wednesday of each month, as we bring in Akron’s changemakers for leadership conversations focused on key elements of the Signature Program curriculum. Get to know the current class and engage with other alumni through this open forum.


Dr. Michael M. Hughes

Dr. Hughes is an Interventional Cardiologist with 25 years practice experience in Akron, Ohio, who transitioned into hospital operations at Barberton Hospital in mid-2106.  Dr. Hughes resides in Akron, Ohio with his wife, Casey.   

Dr. Hughes has held multiple leadership positions including Cardiac Cath lab medical director and serves on multiple operational boards.  He is currently a member of the executive board for NewHealth Collaborative, Summa Health System’s Accountable Care Organization.  Dr. Hughes has served on the Summa Health System Board of Directors and as Chair of the Care Delivery Board.  Dr. Hughes currently is the President of the Summa Cardiovascular Institute and President of the Barberton Campus. 

Dr. Hughes’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology – Clemson University; Doctor of Medicine – Medical University of South Carolina; Internal Medicine Residency – Wake Forest University; Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training – Cleveland Clinic Foundation. 

Dr. Hughes completed his Healthcare MBA at Baldwin-Wallace University.  Dr. Hughes has received several teaching awards from trainees rotating on his services and has been named to the Akron and Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors list – multiple listings.  Dr. Hughes is a fellow in the American College of Cardiology and has served as president of the American Heart Association board of directors for Summit County.  Dr. Hughes is currently on the board of directors for the OPEN M Clinic. 

Dr. Hughes is driven to be an integral part in the transformation of our Summa Health care delivery system to effectively manage our community’s health.
